CONTEXT AND APPLICATION OF AGNEW’S GENERAL STRAIN THEORY TO EXPLAIN CRIME

Robert Agnew’s general strain theory is one of the most respected theories of crime in modern criminology. However, strain theory has not always occupied a respectable position among scholars in the criminological community. Although strain theory quickly achieved popularity in its early beginnings, in the 1960’s it faced harsh criticisms as a result of competition with newer theories such as control and social learning. It was not until Agnew revised strain theory in 1985 that strain theory began to reestablish its credible position within the criminological community.
